Our classes are an open learning environment. Meaning that these skills will be covered typically before you reach that rank that you need to learn them. Give a member exposure to the item in advance. While going thru the ranks they will become more and more familiar to the weapon.

Half Staff
A 3 foot long stick. It can be used either with a single hand or two hands. This picture is showing the Double overhand grip on the weapon. This is a great weapon to use for joint manipulations such as locks and chokes. Striking ability is good until the attacker moves in close. At that point it is used more for locks, pressure points, chokes and moving the attacker. Best thing about the half staff is that it can easily be used as a walking stick, without having the appearance of carrying a weapon. Most techniques done with a half staff can be done with a typical walking cane. Training for this weapon is striking principles and using it in techniques involving joint manipulations.

Club
The club is between 16" and 28" long. The 28" stick is a more typical weapon to have access to. The club is more for striking an attacker, although some of the techniques from the half staff that involve joint manipulations can work with the club. The fact that the club is shorter allowing it to be used more in striking at closer quarters than the half staff. This weapon is easy to find in daily life, some examples are: Folded up Umbrella, Flash Light and a Plunger. Training for this weapon includes striking principles, blocking principles: against unarmed attacks and against other weapons. Unarmed training against someone with a Club attacking you and how to disarm that attacker is also taught.

Strap
The strap is around 3 feet long, if longer the ends can be wrapped around the hand to make it more usable. The typical stance involves holding both ends of the strap. It's mainly use as a flexible weapon is to entangle and wrap up an attacker, by wrapping it around his arms, neck or legs. In an effort to either submit or subdue them. If held by one hand it can also be used as a distraction by whipping it towards the attackers face. Daily items that are like the strap can be a belt, rolled up T-shirt and a water hose.

Sword
For in class training we use a wooded sword with a plastic scabbard. Some prefer the Cold Steel sword made of Polypropylene, that makes it almost impossible to break. We make the handles longer and the blades shorter. This allows for greater manoeuvrability, and fits in more with what a Ninja would have used. A shorter blade allows for a quicker draw, and more close quarter cuts. Although a more "traditional weapon" the sword does help teach better footwork and striking skills. Training with the sword covers proper sword use, drawing the sword, cuts and defending with the sword against an armed attacker.

Staff
A 6 foot pole, but it can be shorter for a shorter person, it should be about the height or just a few inches taller that the person using it. The staff is mostly for striking, and keeping the attacker at a distance, although we do cover some techniques involving using the staff against grabs. We take a realistic approach to the use of the staff, not giving alot of time to the fancy and flash type of movements that look good on film. This weapon is more along the size of a walking stick. Daily items that can be used like a staff are Mops, Brooms and Tent poles.

Hand Gun
Hand gun training in the school involves the principles: involved with disarm a hand gun from an attacker. This is only a PART of the training involving a hand gun. The proper use of a hand gun in a stressful situation depends partly on muscle memory. A person should have intimate knowledge on how to draw, sight and shoot a hand gun, even if they don't own one.

Throwing Net
A throwing net varies alot in size, but the more usable size is about 6 foot square. Far from its use in the movies it does not "take out" an attacker simply by throwing over their head. However by using various throwing techniques it is a great way to distract an attacker to cover your escape, or blind him while you move inwards. In addition to self defense, the wilderness survival skill of using a net for fishing is a plus! Daily items used in place of a throwing net are: Coat or Jacket, Blanket and T-shirt.

 |
Knife
Knife training involves cutting techniques and ways of disarming a knife attack coming at you, regardless if your are unarmed or also have a knife. The use of a knife is important knowledge even if you don't carry one. Once you disarm a knife from an attacker you better know how to use it!
